One of a set of five placemats. Can somebody enlighten me - is this type of cutwork embroidery in grey thread also known as Madeira? I should know; I can always ask at the Guild, but I'm sure someone reading this will tell me!

Patra's Place will be mostly about my linen collection, but also about my SINS (Stuff I'll Never Stitch), UFOs (UnFinished Objects) and projects that I am currently working on. Since I created this first blog, I have diversified somewhat! You can see the list of my other blogs, and my favourite websites and blogs by other people, on the sidebar.

TO my knowledge, this is not Madiera embroidery. Madiera embroidery is an inset and, in my opinion, resembles more of a fine french handsewing. You will see a shape cut out and then "appliqued" to the ground fabric, then the ground fabric is cut away.
To me, this form - with the grey thread - looks Italian but I don't know any more than that.
