Patra's Place will be mostly about my linen collection, but also about my SINS (Stuff I'll Never Stitch), UFOs (UnFinished Objects) and projects that I am currently working on. Since I created this first blog, I have diversified somewhat! You can see the list of my other blogs, and my favourite websites and blogs by other people, on the sidebar.

I've been stitching.
Just in case you thought I'd taken a break from my stitching, I thought I'd better post some photos of what I've been doing. Since joining Stitchin Fingers, I've been enjoying the process of re-learning traditional embroidery stitches, and how to do variations of them. I've used a large piece of Aida for my sampler, which is really just a working piece, not a decorative sampler as such.
This shows what I learned in the first three weeks: Herringbone, Buttonhole/Blanket Stitch, and Detached Chain/Lazy Daisy. The Buttonhole stitching looks ratty because I used stranded cotton instead of pearl or another more robust thread. But that is the beauty of doing an ongoing workshop or course - you learn by your mistakes.
The fourth week was Cretan Stitch. I could not get my head around this one for days! After studying numerous needlecraft books and internet sites, I managed to figure it out. Certainly not a favourite stitch though, as you can probably tell. I did as little as I thought was necessary to show I'd learnt it, then gave up!
The three rows at the foot of this show I've done tonight - Week 5's stitch - Chevron Stitch...and I've just noticed a mistake - oh pooh.
I found the Cretan Stich hard. Just as I thought I knew how to do it, I'd lose it and it was like starting all over again. I am enjoying the whole process though. Still got this weeks to do
ReplyDeleteGina, the stitching looks fine to me I have looked and looked without finding your error...(smiles)
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to drop in to tell you I have been so sick the past week that doc on Monday was going to put me in hospital (no way!)....gave me a puffer and more anibiotics the infection in my lungs is bad. BUT.....I feel I am starting to get a little better between coughing fits!....and temp rising! anyway love to you both.

I didn't think the buttonhole looked ratty. You did some interesting variations in shape. I don't find the cretan hard to do, but I find it the most boring and ugly stitch. Your variations look fine. I almost never use that one!
ReplyDeleteYour stitching samples look great, and I love the butterfly in your previous post.
ReplyDeleteCool! I like the colours! :)
ReplyDeleteI've been doin' some stitchin' too... ;)
You're creating a great little sampler! I love the bright, cheery colors.
ReplyDeleteDear Stitching Friends, thank you all for your kind remarks on my work. Susan, I tend to agree with you; I don't think Cretan is a very attractive stitch either. I didn't think of that before; just knew I don't like doing it!
ReplyDeleteLee-ann, I'll talk to you soon.
LB and Chelle - I've been selecting the colours at random from all my left-over threads from old kits etc. and I'm rather pleased with the bright appearance myself!
